I bought this set when it was only $62.41 and it's good value as long as its still under $10 a book. I couldn't find any of the books before book 5 in a book store ANYWHERE, and was so grateful to find it here, and it arrived when they said it would. This series is fantastic, funny, exciting and the characters are all great and as realistic as they can be in such a different reality. Sookie is a fantastic heroine, she gets snitty and she makes mistakes and she gets angry and she saves the day. For someone who was disappointed at the direction Twilight series took (ie. towards Edward unquestionably. Go team Jacob) it's delightful, she has a life outside of her boyfriend, and she WANTS a life outside of her boyfriend. I got the books 3 days ago and am up to the 3rd book. Its something i put down, but immediately pick back up or think about until its in my hands again. I watched True blood first and then HAD to read the series and am not disappointed in the least.
Finally a female character (other then Buffy, who also has a silly sounding name when you think about it) who kicks butt in a series about vampires and other supes.
I'm really glad that i did buy this set. I had heard lots of positive reviews about this, and fueled by interest about the books behind "True Blood", i decided to investigate.
I have to admit that i had read little vampire lit before this besides a little Anne Rice and the twilight series, and did partially buy these books after reading stephanie myers series, however this series makes Twilight look weak. And i loved Twilight. Its just the fierceness and self determinedness of the heroine, and the typical vampire flaws that inhibit our fanged heroes, that make this series much relateable, in a way different to twilight.
While i dont want this to be a "Sookie Stackhouse vs Twilight"
comparison, there are several similarities that may interest readers looking for something after the sometimes painfully flowery prose that is twilight.
Also called the Southern Vampire Mysteries, the story centres around Sookie Stackhouse, whose name alone suggests the fantasy and surrealism that surrounds this series. Sookie, an uneducated (by her own admission) waitress who lives in fictional town Bon Temps, in the the South, suddenly becomes embroiled in a seething underworld of murder, deception, death and sex, that her new vampire boyfriend, Bill, who she met in the bar (now that Vampires have "come out of the coffin" and are relatively accepted in society, the same as blacks in the South).
These books are witty, flowing and yet still wondeful/ terrible romantic trash, in the best way possible. They are addictive and satisfying, some better than others, with more in production, and well worth a read.
One little trifle: The free shipping was great, but if that means that they are going to be too stingy to spring for maybe a little bubble wrap to prevent the smashed in side of some of the books, like what happened to mine, then i think i would pay to get books taken a little better care of.
All the same, "The Southern Vampire Mysteries": Its Mills and Boon mystery with bite.
I have just finished the Twilight series and was looking for something similar to read. After watching the True Blood first season I have decided to purchase this book set and see if the books are as good as the TV program....As a matter of fact they are way better! Definitely worth buying!
I absolutely love these books. I can't put them down. Having previously read The Twighlight Series and other YA Vampire books (even though I am no longer a young adult) I was on the lookout for something new I was hesitant reading this one because for some reason I had the feeling that these would be more romance then supernatural, but not the case. They have just the right amount of romance, comedy, supernatural and so much more. Can't wait to read more..
best series ive ever read concerning the supernatural ie: vampires & werewolves. These books are very much compared to the twilight saga due to its supernatural/romance content...but I really did not enjoy the Twilight novels so much..I found Stephenie Meyers writing style one dimensional, corny & banal....Charlaine Harris on the other hand is witty, exciting & spicy...very much more adult. Give these books a go if you were left unsatisfied with the twilight novels & i assure you, you wont be dissapointed, also If you like movies such as Underworld, Blade, Interview with the Vampire and especially the TV series based on these books TrueBlood (which is 10/10) etc like I do, you will love..love..love.. these books, dont hesitate and check it out!
I recently watched the True Blood series and read the Twilight Set. I was craving more on this genre when I stumbled onto these, not realising that the TV series came from a novel. I am almost finished the first book & can already highly recommend these. They are written for an older audience than twilight and differ enough from the TV series to keep you interested. For those into the whole Vampire Romance stories, you will not be disapointed.
This set of books is great value. Honestly, once I start reading one of these books I can't put it down and when I finish it I can't wait to get into the next one. Sookie Stackhouse is a magnet for trouble, but she is also very independent and according to the male characters, very lovable. The story moves along at a tremendous pace. The vampires are very real characters and the cause of many of Sookies adventures, and down right sexy as well. Let's hope the TV Series is as good as the books.
Always loved these books but couldn't afford the hardbacks.
Sookie is a womans woman.
No deferring to the males in the books!
Finally a woman who makes her own decisions and stands by them .
The Lily bard series is great as well.
This is a complicated and very dynamic plot with twists and turns making it hard to put down. The mixture of supernatural and romance makes for a non-stop adrenaline pumping adventure.
absolutely brilliant books! I would recommend these for anyone. What more could you ask for .. vampires werewolves, shape shifters, fairies and a telepathic waitress!! Quick reads that you cannot put down - not that you would want to!!
