Mercy Thompson is auto mechanic by day and, occasionally, by night a skinwalker. A different kind of fae from the werewolf pack that bought Mercy up, she turns into a coyote not a wolf. In a world where some of the less scary fae have let themselves be known to the general population, were's and skinwalkers are still firmly in the closet. Mercy is a tough character with just a hint of a soft heart which becomes apparent when she comes to the aid of a young were with no pack and no one to look out for him. Then there's murder, mystery and a local pack leader who's threatening to eat her cat should it wander onto his property again! There is also the "hint" of romance for said cat eater and a love from the past.
I loved this book and could not put it down as my dh will attest to! I read till 2 in the morning to finish it and I cannot wait for the 2nd one which is coming soon ,Blood Bound (Feb 2007). If you're into Charlaine Harris, Kim Harrison, and especially Carrie Vaughn you'll love this urban fantasy novel.
This was good. Despite the mechanic-as-pop-tart cover, this was not a romance novel, although the elements are there for it to degenerate into such if they decide that is what sells.
Werewolf pack leader next door, childhood werewolf boyfriend, itself.
The hero of the piece is a skinwalker, though, and a smaller variety of canine. She has a few guns, but does not have the fetish or aggressively obnoxious stance that Anita Blake does. Being a mechanic, not a cop-necromancer might have something to do with that.
There is a little more humour in these.
"Stefan's bus was painted to match the Mystery Machine, which said a lot about the vampire it belonged to. Stefan told me that he'd briefly considered painting it black a few years ago when he started watching Buffy, but, in the end, he'd decided the vampire slayer was no match for Scooby Doo."
There is some slight mention/foreshadowing of the fact that this woman is more powerful than she knows, so her superheroic antics may become more pronounced in future as she finds out about them, even though she handles multiple violent werewolves here.
"How did you break your arm, Mercy?" he asked.
A werewolf tossed me against a giant packing crate while I was trying to rescue a frightened young girl who'd been kidnapped by an evil witch and a drug lord."
this book was a nice change from the super aggressive supernatural chick that is currently toted as the fantasy uber woman.
the main character, mercedes thompson, is just a regular girl trying to make a living as an auto mechanic. for hundreds of years the supernatural community has remained secret with few humans knowing the extent to which gremlins, vampires, werewolves, and other fey have secretly infiltrated their world. but now due to the 'Gray Lords' (an unknown government of fey leaders) the non-humans of the world are being forced out into the open. this includes mercy is a born 'skinwalker', someone who can change shape at will, her shape being that of a coyote.
all of this background creates an interesting milieu in which mercy can discover her true self as a supernatural power to be reckoned with, or a human wannabe.
all in all this was a great read and i cant wait to see what happens next!
This is a great novel with many different characters + twists & turns. If you love the world of werewolves and shapeshifters this diffently a must read book. As you follow the life of Mercy Thompson a young mechanic, you well meet people is her life that are most intersting. In this novel, I believe there are characters that we can all relate to in some wayor another. I would rate this noval as a 9 out of 10.
After reading Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse series, and being a bit disappointed by Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake novels I was recommended this series. Brilliant! Mercy Thompson is a much more endearing character than Anita Blake (who I found it hard to like because of her overly arrogant attitude!). Mercy reminds me much more of Sookie Stackhouse, and this book is written in a similar style also.
It was the first 'Were' focused book I'd read, and I wasn't sure whether it'd get into it as much as I do the vampire fiction, but I needn't have worried! I was only about halfway through Moon Called before I ordered the rest of the series. Good fun!
Good book. Enjoyable story line with a certain element of suspence to keep you reading to find out what happends next. Looking forward to seeing who Mercy picks as a mate. Good to see a woman taking charge and not being dominated.
