From the 1930's until the 1950's was the Golden Age of comics, From the 1950's until the 1970's the Silver Age. Mid 1970's until the mid 1990's was the Plastic Age. Watchmen is the epitome of Plastic Age comics. It has a dark storyline filled with mystery and nostalgia, with a Cold War backdrop. It features great original characters, writing and art, it has been regarded as a legendary work for many years now. With the release of the Watchmen movie many will wish to own the original source material, here now is your chance. This title along with "The Dark Knight Returns" by Frank Miller firmly reasserted DC comics as top dog during the 1980's. Find out why.
I read the graphic novel in anticipation of the film. Why the hype? How could a oversized comic attract such publicity? These question were answered as soon as i began reading and bgean to undersatnd some of the genius of author Alan Moore's mind. There are numerous subtexts and plot woven into the story, not the least a fasicnating retelling of this period in history. The characters are exquistitly drwn both for the mind and the eye, this classic will not leave you dissapointed!
Make no mistake, this graphic novel is about as epic as they come- and you will not be able to put it down. A fantastic read, it combines groundbreaking graphics with a thoughtful and intriguing plotline that begs the question 'who watches the Watchmen?', a question that is as relevant in 2009 as it was in the the 1980's when this novel was first published.
If you like your heroes flawed, if you enjoy subtexts, if you relish background information, then you simply must buy this novel.
An absolute masterpiece. Innovative, enthralling and highly entertaining. The film was fantastic but, because of its time limitations, cannot match the book. Rightly deserves the praise and it's place as one of Time's best books.
I've got no love for superheroes. They're boring, repetitive, creatively vapid, adolescent power fantasies that we (the comic reading public) should have left behind a long time ago.
Watchmen should have been the death knell of the superhero - here Moore tells an amazingly human story that stands not only as the apex of superhero tales, but also makes all other superhero stories obselete as it goes on to perform the autopsy.
Highly-detailed art, and a multi-layered, finely crafted story.
I decided to read Watchmen after I'd seen the movie, because I felt that there were loose ends that the film hadn't tied up. And I am so grateful that I did! Watchmen is brilliantly clever and really gains from being in the graphic novel style (my first ever comic book).
It is set in an alternate version of the 1980s, where Nixon is still president, the Cold War is teetering on the brink of Mutually Assured Destruction and costumed vigilantes have been outlawed. Several stories (a murder mystery, conspiracy theory, love story etc.) all combine to achieve one of the greatest and bravest endings in literature.
This book absolutely deserves its place in the Time Magazines 100 greatest ever novels. I absolutely recommend this book to everyone.
ps. if you're at all confused about where some of the stories are going, rest assured that absolutely everything comes together and makes perfect sense
An intelligent thought provoking graphic novel, a dark intriguing character driven plot that is still beyond it's time! Pick this up and you won't regret it!
The Watchmen is an enjoyable read and hard to put down. With an original twist on an already saturated genre, Watchmen will suprise every reader and spark the most dormant of imagination.
I was compelled to read it all in one sitting, only taking breaks to process everything that was happening in the vivid and inspiring illustraions.
I highly reccommend this to all readers, especially those with an interest in graphic novels and superheros.
