Design and Make Hats provides a thoroughly beautiful and comprehensive introduction to the craft of millinery. First the author discusses design and inspiration, and then she takes the reader through a survey of the materials and techniques generally used in millinery. Then the reader is guided through fourteen fashionable hat designs, easy to make from inexpensive and accessible fabrics and components, clearly laid out in an instructive and attractive design. Each project is set out in a simple and straightforward way, starting with an image of the finished piece, listing the supplies you will need and the basic tools required, then following with an illustrated making sequence. Even absolute beginners can confidently and successfully tackle all the projects. Finally there is a section of pattern-cutting, taking you through a variety of styles and shapes. By the end of the book you will feel confident enough to complete a variety of hats, as well as design your own unique styles.

This is a review for Deisgn and Make Fashion Hats. I am writing this as a qualified and experienced milliner, I purchase such book as resouce items for my bookshelves; to keep myself up to date and immerse myself in the god work of others. Millinery can be a solitary business.
Ok firstly there are not really any design elements taught in this book, obviously you take what you are being shown and then further develop your designs on this base. It's a good contemporary millinery book.
The photography is clear. Illustrated on a number of pages are a few basics of millinery such as blocking hats etc. You are given a good tip on how to block sinamay to avoid those unsightly creases in steep crowns. Understand that you are not shown everything you need to be a master milliner, it takes years of experience and costly investments.
You are shown how to make fabric hats such as caps, cossacks, berets that are pieced, cotton rain hats, wool felt hat (blocked on timber blocks), leather beret (these type of hats you can purchase commercial patterns for in sewing shops already, you do have to draft patterns to make these), feathered head piece (welcome to glue), sinamay head piece as well as more fabric hats that bore me silly (I love blocks and sinamay, too impatient to sew fabric together unless its silk).
The book is worth the investment for the lessons on making a straw visor, these are simply elegant when made in coloured sisals; the fur felt perching cap; the silk head piece (using buckram and silk fabric), a pieced sinamay cocktail pillbox hat (this is the only book I know that handles this, I learnt this method through instruction from a leading Australian milliner some years ago).
Not a bad buy at all, takes about three weeks plus to received from Fishpond in New Zealand.
