I have been a big fan of this series and re-read a number of times. I enjoyed reading Daniel and Martha's story, and seeing the continuance of other beloved characters. I felt Birdy was less dimensional than her siblings but was being brought into the story to pave the way to another book which would have followed her story, trials and tribulations and allowed us to see Nathanial and Elizabeth growing into their Winter years. I was really disappointed with the end of the book which gave a series of editorials which skipped us thru the following twenty years which covered a number of deaths within the family and finally the original two characters. I was suprisingly sad the author did this, as I was enjoying watching the family grow older and expand with each generation, and I felt a bit cheated that we didn't get to know Birdy as a grown up. Still on the whole, I am currently re-reading the series and I recommend the series to anyone.

I have loved reading this series and for the most part I loved this book as well. I enjoyed having Martha as one of the main characters and enjoyed reading the interaction with the wider Bonner family. Birdy was at that awkward stage of "not a girl, not yet a woman" and the story suffered a bit because of it. I was very disappointed by the ending. It became obvious this was going to be the last book and rather than gradually ease us into it the author went with a wallop bang approach..

Its always sad to come to the end of something good and the "Into The Wilderness" series about Nathaniel and Elizabeth Bonner living in the American wilderness of yesteryear is a very fine series indeed. This last book does not disappoint with its mixture of loving relationships, suspense, sadness and grief as well as an insight into America of the day.
The wonderful characters that Sara Donati has given real life to over the past few years have come to mean a lot to me, like family. It breaks my heart to say goodbye.

I has been a long wait for this novel, the final in Donati's "wilderness" series.....maybe it's been too long! I really wanted to like it, I really tried to like it but I just didn't. It starts off well with an introduction from Curiosity, one of the great characters from the series but by the end I just couldn't wait for it to finish. Birdy was just annoying and the characters seemed to be curiously one dimensional. It was almost as if Miss Donati just really didn't want to write this one, but because of all the pressure from her avid readership (and probably her publishers) she caved in. The epilogue at the end of the novel rounded off everyone's lives and Elizabeth's last letter was very moving but on the whole I felt cheated by this novel. Yes I would recommend it to those of us who have read all of Miss Donati's other works but if you haven't don't start with this one.

This was an interesting book and nice finish to the series, as much as I would have loved to see the series continue with the Bonner grandchildren, the finish clearly was an end with the matriach and patriach of the Bonner family passing away. Overall a beautiful read on a lazy Sunday afternoon
