This is the story of the UN in the 1990s told from three young perspectives. Andrew is a doctor who has been on a mission to work for the UN ever since he met a Cambodian doctor in medical school. Heidi is a woman of 30 who has just broken up with her husband, her childhood sweetheart and can no longer afford to work as a social worker in New York. Kenneth is as brash young Harvard lawyer. They meet in Cambodia and then are sent off to different parts of the world as UN staff.
I loved this book. I especially loved Andrew's (the NZ doctor) writing.
He writes without ego, simply and the stories he has to tell are shocking.
Yet everything all three of them write about is happening in the world today.
Genocide, torture....yet people remain silent and the UN powerless.
