In this book, ten authors from nine East Asian countries reexamine the East Asian miracle and the subsequent economic meltdown in an attempt to discover a reliable path toward recovery for the region. In their search for a healthy recovery in both economic and human security terms, the authors consider such issues as the roles of domestic and international governance during the periods of prosperity and crisis. Good governance that delivers the economic goals of stability, competitiveness, growth, and resilience as well as the social goals of poverty alleviation, better income and wealth distribution, employment, and social safety nets is essential to the establishment of a sustainable system of development for the region. Sustainable development at both the domestic and regional levels is subject to political and social constraints, the limit of natural resources, and the vagaries of capital flows and the financial system. With the benefit of hindsight, the authors suggest ways to apply the lessons learned from the East Asian miracle and meltdown to achieve a more secure way of life for the inhabitants of the region.
