."..something thumped our boat. Edith and I grabbed the rail. Mr. Irvine hugged Edith protectively and looked beyond the bow.
"See anything?" the captain called to his crew.
Before anyone could answer, we heard an ear-splitting boom, as if ten cannons had exploded. All heads turned toward shore. Immediately every light blacked out, darkening the city into a silhouette against the lightening sky.
"Papa, what's happened?"
A woman next to us screamed, then someone cried out the horrible word:
