This memoir narrates an account of an English couples tribulations after buying and modernizing a farm in southern Spain. Stewart writes in the casual style of Peter Mayles series on Provence or Extra Virgin by Annie Hawes. He may inspire would-be go-getters to finish DIY projects. He tells heart-warming stories about babies and animals. The subtitle An Optimist in Spain is not ironic, since Stewarts voice is informal, his tone animated, his mood always sunny. Stewart plunks himself in the dotty Englishman abroad tradtion with Eric Newby and Peter Fleming. Ornery readers like me (who prefer testy Bill Bryson, irascible Robert Byron, malicious Evelyn Waugh) will end up wanting more than the breezy serenity on display here

I loved this book. The author comes across as unassuming and very genuine in his enjoyment and involvement in his new life. He gives a great insight into his life and the lives of people in this beautiful part of Southern Spain always in a warm and friendly way. It was one of those books I didn't want to finish because it was such fun and so enjoyable. May there be many more to come.
