A really interesting, thorough and useful book on 6-24 month old babies covering communication, play, feeding, sleeping and routines. I found the communication section really well thought out and have implemented a number of the communication and play strategies that have improved my life and that of my 9 month old son.
As we have a 'problem' with sleeping, I've read almost every book on how to get your baby to sleep and this, although it has much more to offer than any of the other books I've read, and gives the best advice on how to prevent and manage crying, still is a 'tricked up' version of controlled crying. This is fine if you are comfortable with this method.
If you cannot stand controlled crying in any form then try "The No-Cry Sleep Solution" by Elizabeth Pantley.

This book does some have lots of information. There is some interesting information on communication. It is over 700 pages long, so it can get a bit deep and a bit heavy to read, but the author obviously knows her stuff. Even though I read it all, I found that whilst there may be 700 pages of information it is bascially just another way of saying, that your baby has to cry to learn to sleep. Not what I was hoping for, as every book I read keeps lulling me into a false sense of security.

What a fantastic book! So very thorough, full of detailed information on everything to do with babies and toddlers and how to help them become content, well slept and better eaters. Our daughter is sleeping through the night most nights now, and when she is waking overnight, we have a clear idea of why. My husband and I have finally found a solution that suits both of us, with me wanting a more gentle solution and him wanting her to cry it out alone. The settling techniques do include some crying but contains sections on interpreting cries and how to respond to them, rather than just 'leave your child for X minutes'. I am loving her reasoning behind all of her methods, rather than the routine and techniques just being something I'm following 'because she said so'. Her focus is heavily on effective communication with the little ones, and I've had my eyes opened as to how much of an impact good communication can have on a child's day (and night). I feel like I still have a lot to learn from this book! I would recommend it to anyone and am so glad to have found it before the arrival of baby #2.

I bought this book for my daughter who has had neverending problems with her baby since birth due to allergies and illness. He is now 13 months. Up until now he has had to be rocked to sleep, every sleep time, every day and night, she could not get any helpful advice from doctors or health care sisters. No one could take him to give her a break as he would only go to bed for her. She rang me the day after I gave her the book and was so excited. She says it not only reinforces many of the things she is doing but it takes her one step further as well as offering new ideas on how to tackle behavioural traits. It is surprising the simplicity of the extra things she has introduced into his and her daily routine that have changed his behaviour so much. He is much happier, easier to manage, goes to sleep by himself and is content to play and amuse himself. She is much more relaxed, happier and she now sees a baby as he always should have been, happy and content. I feel her comment that the book is in plain english, easy to read and understand; is worth noting for all of those young mothers thinking of buying it.
