Say what you will about Anton LaVey, many have over the years. Labelled a misanthrope, misogynist, pervert, or just plain kooky, LaVey weathered it all and remains as enigmatic today as he was in 1966 when he officially loosed the Church of Satan upon the world and ushered in the Age of Satan. This book is the first collection (of two, Satan Speaks being the second) of LaVey's diatribes, essays, and ponderings on a diverse range of subjects from weak-willed white witches to his Combination Lock principle of Greater Magic. It's an entertaining read and a good precursor to other Church of Satan publications. I recommend the essay titled "Acquisitions" where LaVey explains that although he might give off the appearance of material wealth, he enjoyed all the things he already possessed and had no need for anything more than what he had. Which is a timely reminder that possessions don't make the man and the rampant consumerism of herd mentality is not something to be proud of.

An interesting and informative book, written in a mostly formal manner, The Devil's Notebook is an excelent book for anyone who is keen to find out LaVey's opinions on occultism, non-conformity and the goodguy badge. Written with Lavey's trademark ironic and sarcastic sense of humour, LaVey makes fantastic reading once again with this collection of essays. Included is a satanic song written by LaVey himself, and even a ritual described in great detail about how to transform ones self into a werewolf. His insightful perspective and unique makes this book well worth reading.
