First published as "The Cynic's Word Book" (1906) and later reissued under its preferred name in 1911, Bierce's notorious collection of barbed definitions forcibly contradicts Samuel Johnson's earlier definition of a lexicographer as a harmless drudge.

I love this book! When going to bed I usually open up a few pages for a laugh. I enjoy enoying people around me by quoting it a little too much. This dictionary is filled with witty and telling gems that are enjoyably dark- as the night. Perfect book for the neighbourhood cynic. I recommend it to anyone- every house should have one, right between the Bible and the Koran.
