Small-town cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse has had more than her share of experience with the supernatural - but now it's really hitting close to home. When Sookie sees her brother Jason's eyes start to change, she knows he's about to turn into a were-panther for the first time - a transformation he embraces more readily than most shapeshifters she knows. But her concern becomes cold fear when a sniper sets his deadly sights on the local changeling population, and Jason's new panther brethren suspect he may be the shooter. Now, Sookie has until the next full moon to find out who's behind the attacks - unless the killer decides to find her first...

Plot twists and fascinating characters abound in this welcome addition to Harris's Anthony Award-winning "Southern Vampire" series. Charming heroine and cocktail waitress Sookie Stackhouse must once again use her mind-reading talents to solve a mystery and take out some really bad guys. Someone has been shooting shapeshifters. Even Sam, her boss at Melotte's tavern, who from time to time turns into a collie, becomes a victim. For help, she turns to the local vampire honcho, the handsome, sexy Eric, who complies but expects a favor in return. As if this isn't enough, Sookie herself is targeted by an assassin; she almost dies when her house is torched and is then shot but fortunately not badly wounded. On top of everything else, her Were friend Alcide compels her to witness the brutal, bloody ritual used to choose a new werewolf pack leader. Much of the action here has its roots in Dead to the World, but the author unobtrusively keeps new readers apprised of what happened earlier. Harris's rousing fifth Sookie Stackhouse fantasy-mystery (after 2004's Dead to the World) pits vampires, were-creatures, shifters and one fairy godmother against a sniper with an apparent aversion to nonhumans. If trying to discover who's behind the shootings isn't enough, the telepathic cocktail waitress from Bon Temps, La., has to cope with a few other distractions: her sexy "Were" friend, Alcide Herveaux, needs her help in his father's bid to become the next leader of the local werewolf pack; her boss, Sam Merlotte (a collie in his spare time), gets shot; her house partly burns down; and what's she to do about the handsome vampire bartender who dresses as a pirate at Sam's place? Between one mishap and another, Sookie is one busy gal. Harris does an admirable job of creating a heroine who's not only interesting but completely believable in a world of the strange and the different. Natural and humorous dialogue and a nicely paced plot that doesn't dwell so much on Sookie's old boyfriends help make this entry the best yet in the series. Agent, Joshua Bilmes at Jabberwocky. 10-city author tour. (May 3) FYI: Harris is also the author of the Aurora Teagarden (Real Murders) and the Lily Bard (Shakespeare's Landlord) mystery series. I was looking for a light read, so picked "Dead as a Doornail". I had never heard of "Sookie Stackhouse" before - and up until I had read it, did not realise that a movie had been made on the series. As mentioned, I was looking for something light to read and this was it. I must say I was surprised that I did enjoy it as much as I did, in fact I am going to start reading the whole series from the beginning. Anyone picking up a book mid series as I did need not worry as the book is a novel on it's own, and where necessary the author fills in what had happened before. Sookie is an unusal heroine. I would thoroughly recommend this book.

An amazing book – great depth and draws you into each and every charter in the book. Charlaine Harris is a truly gifted writer; she knows how to bring everything to life. All her books have the wonderful hint of humour.
well written and by the end of each book you think you know everyone personally.

Sookie has noticed changes in her brother. If it was uncertain before, its curtain now. Jason would never be the same again. At least not at the full moon. Jason had been bitten by a shapeshifter, a werepanther, and now at every full moon he would change into a werepanther, well a half-man half-panther. Jason seemed to be fitting into the werepanther community at Hotshot quite well. That is until a sniper appears.
A sniper is targeting the shapeshifters of Bon Temps, and some of them seen to think Jason may be the shooter. If Sookie can't find the truth before the next full moon the shifters may take matters into there own hands. Will Sookie loose Jason, the only family she has left?
But that's just the beginning of Sookie's problems. There is yet another attempt on Sookie's life, well several attempts to be accurate. The ex-boyfriend to deal with, a number of suitors to contend with, a fire, a beating, a friend in need, a fight to the death, and supernatural politics that Sookie somehow got dragged into.
Another intriguing fast paced story that is impossible to put down. A great mystery that will keep you guessing till the last page. A very enjoyable read.

Once I start these books I cannot put them down till its finished. Jason's about to turn into a werepanther for the 1st time & he & Sookie are unsure what to expect. But bigger problems come to Bon Temps as someone is hunting were's & shape shifters. One were is killed & Sam & Calvin leader of the werepanthers are left injured. Suspician falls on Jason despite his enthusiasm at what he has now become. Eric helps Sookie by loaning out a pirate looking vampire to help at the bar while Sam is recovering. As if Sookie doesn't have enough men after her, when she attends the election for then next werewolf leader she meets Quinn. This is a very exciting series that is easy to devour.

This Sookie Stackhouse is as enjoyable as the rest of the series, lighthearted entertainment that further expands on the lycanthrope communities around Sookie and an Eric who is decidedly Un-Eric. While juggling the worries of her brother about to shift for the first time, and having a nice and sexy Eric in her house, whom she really ought not to touch, it all seems a little unfair that she then gets pulled into a fight between the preternatural good and bad guys. Needless to say, Charlaine Harris pulls this off by using Sookie's resilience and some fun plotting. The stories are slowly expanding to include more members of the supe community which makes for entertaining reading. Fully recommended installment of the wonder series

Dead as a Doornail is the fifth installment in Charlaine Harris' dynamic Sookie Stackhouse series. Sookie, the buxom, blond, barmaid from Bon Temps is once again thrust into things that she should not be. Her psychic abilities make her a magnet for the supernatural world.
At the conclusion of the Dead to the World, Eric has regained his self, but remembers nothing of his time with Sookie. Jason, Sookie's brother has been found, but is now a werepanther. Dead as a Doornail opens with Jason experiencing his first full moon as a werepanther. Amazingly enough, Jason embraces his new life and enjoys shifting. As much of a relief as this is for Sookie, trouble is looming. Someone is killing shifters and Jason is the prime suspect. To add to Sookie's turmoil, Eric does not remember his time with Sookie, but knows something important happened. In another twist, Debbie's family is desperately searching for her. This search finds its way to Sookie's doorstep once again.
In Dead as a Doornail we get a much clearer picture of the shifter communities - the werewolves and werepanthers. Sookie is drawn into the political struggles within the werewolf pack structure. The outcome is not a happy ending for Sookie or werewolves. Calvin Norris, the head of the werepanthers in Hot Shot continues to attempt to woo Sookie. Another love interest is most certainly not something Sookie needs in her already complicated love life.
I enjoyed reading Dead as a Doornail immensely. Sookie and her adventures are always a treat. The only drawback to this book is that Sookie and the reader become very disappointed when knowledge of certain character defects becomes evident within those close to Sookie. All of the characters, old and new, add flavor to the series and make Sookie's madcap adventures even more entertaining. On the whole, Dead as a Doornail is a fun read.

Sookie is funny. She's not funny in a 'laughing all the way through' type way, but she's funny in the way she thinks, in the way she acts and in the way that Harris approaches things. In this book, Sookie is inundated with people who want to go out with her – the problem is that none of them are ‘normal’. Admittedly Sookie isn’t normal, and the way she reads minds is apparently a bit of a turn-off. I liked this book, and if you’ve read any of the other books then you’ll appreciate it more. If you got put off by Hamilton’s Anita Blake slowly descending into porn, then this is the place to turn to!

I like Sookie. And every time I pick up one of these books I expect it to be a comedy...maybe something about the covers. But I'm not disappointed when I realise, once again, I'm not going to be giggling through the story.
Sookie's even more caught up in the supernatural world as her brother's first were change is upon him, the werewolf community involve her in the 'election' of a new leader, and a sniper is shooting at weres...and Sookie. Added to that her ongoing relationship with Eric, the viking vampire who is detirmined to get to the bottom of what really happened between them when he lost his memory, Bill, her former undead paramour, and even several weres who wouldn't mind taking a more serious role in Sookie's love-life, and you've got a flaming good time...oh yeah, did I mention someone set her house on fire?

Lightweight, disposable, but enjoyable almost mystery about a telepathic waitress with a taste for highly exotic boys. Definitely something you can read while doing two other things at the same time. The female protagonist comes across as a pretty normal woman, stuck in a waitress job at a garden variety American standard bar/burger joint, that is quite recognisable.
