Reviews
As the only daughter and youngest child of Lord Colum of Sevenwaters, Sorcha grows up protected and pampered by her six older brothers. When a sorceress's evil magic ensorcels Colum's sons, transforming them into swans, only Sorcha's efforts can break the curse. Marillier's first novel uses a familiar Celtic legend to tell the story of a young woman's sacrifice for the sake of those she loves and her own discovery of unexpected joy in the midst of sorrow. The author's keen understanding of Celtic paganism and early Irish Christianity adds texture to a rich and vibrant novel that belongs in most fantasy collections. This imaginative retelling of the Celtic Swans myth begins a promising new British romantic fantasy series. Six brothers have been turned into swans by their wicked stepmother. Only their sister, Sorcha, can save these sons of an Irish chieftain by weaving magical shirts that will turn them back into human beings. As she begins her task in the forest, she is raped and forced to flee. British nobleman Hugh of Harrowfield rescues her from the attacker while on a search for his missing brother, Simon, whose life Sorcha has saved earlier. Unfortunately, Sorcha can't reveal to Hugh her role in helping Simon, for she has had to take an oath of silence until she completes the shirts. When she marries Hugh, she assumes a new identity as "Jenny" so that she can return to England. Once there, however, she is thrust into a deadly power struggle among Hugh and his allies; his mother, Anne; and Hugh's wicked uncle, Richard of Northwoods--and she narrowly escapes being burned at the stake for witchcraft and treason. Though the novel features a stereotypically happy ending and leans more toward romance than fantasy, Marillier is a fine folklorist and a gifted narrator who has created a wholly appealing and powerful character in this daughter of the forest. "I enjoyed it immensely...For an Irish resident, familiar with the mores and customs, "Daughter of the Forest" has special meaning and relevance. Juliet Marillier is a fine new fantasy writer--and what trials does she put her characters through in the next book?"--Anne McCaffrey
"Ms. Marillier's ability to use so well such a known legend and make it both logical and exciting is an outstanding gift. I am now, of course, eager to see 'what happens next.'"--Andre Norton

Daughter of the Forest is a beautiful and moving story, blending history with folklore in a way only Juliet Marillier can achieve. It retains all the fairy tale elements of its base text, while adding substance and depth through its fascinating characters, particularly that of Sorcha, the silent heroine. Never has a woman achieved so much by saying so little; her journey to save her brothers is one of endurance, patience, respect and love, and it is definitely worth the read. If you like Heart's Blood, you will love Daughter of the Forest.

This was my first Juliet Marillier book, and i absolutely adored it. I've already purchased the following book and can't wait for it's delivery.
The scenery, action & romance made it a very diffuicult book to put down and I found myself having some very late nights as I couldn't help but find out what happened next. Any fans of Jules Watson will definately enjoy this lady.

I loved this book, it is so well written! I cried at least twice during this book and I can't wait to read the following installments. I've not read any by this author before but am keen for more. I would liken this a bit like pillars of the earth in that it is quite sequence of events that happen through out this book. It isn't hastley written and no rush job at the end!! Give it a go I am sure you won't want to put it down!

Growing up without a mother, Sorcha thought was difficult. Until she finds herself in a fight to keep her brothers, and a struggle to keep her heart. She is hurt in her silence and can't tell her story or scream for help. She can only speak through the mind to her brothers and the gods. But they aren't always lisening to her. Sorcha soon finds herself in the clutches of a man who is the brother of a man she healed and fell in love with, though he was a briton. She is Red's only key to finding his brother, and the locket that holds his heart. She endures a long silence only to be broken for the love she holds in her heart, which also saves others. To return home would be to leave her man, Red, behind and maybe lose her love forever.
