Drawing on elements from the paranormal world that bestseller Moning (Spell of the Highlander) created in her earlier romances, this suspense novel takes readers on a darker journey, one dominated by the search for a powerful Faery magic and bereft of the romantic magic Moning's fans have come to expect. When MacKayla Lane, an ordinary young woman, travels to Ireland to track down her sister's murderer, she is sucked into an extraordinary world filled with ancient secrets, vampires, assorted Fae nasties and other tough-to-kill beings. In the process, Mac learns of her own unusual talents and finds an unlikely mentor in the wealthy and mysterious Jericho Barrons. Moning's newest foray contains suspense and plenty of setup. Indeed, this reads like a fragment of a larger story, an introduction to character and place that, while entertaining, skims the surface. But it's a compelling world filled with mystery and vivid characters, and this, combined with the hint of sparks between Jericho and Mac, will stoke readers' fervor for Bloodfever, the next installment. All I can say is "WOW", Karen Marie Moning never fails to surprise me! Her writing style, is as usual, brilliant (although the whole "first person" thing takes a bit to get used to!) and her storyline is very different to what I used to or expected from her. Unfortunately I do struggle to compare this work with her 'Highlander' series as this series (or book in particular) requires more imagination with it's graphically detailed images and has no sex-scenes, but is sexually powerful in another way......however, definitely a series I can recommend to all!!!
After reading other reviews I was quiet looking forward to reading the first of the MacKayla Lane novels. Unfortunately the book seemed to take a while to get into and it wasn't until I was three quarters of the way through that I actually started to really get into the story line. The main character was believable enough however it took a while to really understand the other characters. Overall I enjoyed the book but might wait a couple of months before thinking about picking up the 2nd one.
What a great premise .... what a lousy delivery of that story. Written in the first person this would have to be one of the most annoying and banal "heroines" I have come across in quite some time. Mac, goes in search of her sister's killer, making huge leaps/assumptions to keep the story going, all the while whinging about the state of her nail polish. It took ages for the plot to settle down and even then it seemed forced and Mac's decisions make no sense.
The book starts of easily enough but readers will very quickly realise that this isn't a romance novel and there are greater, darker things in the world than Mac would hav ever dreamed of. When I first heard of these books, I had just finished reading the Highlander series and wanted to read another romance by Karen but The fever series do a complete 180 and yet I couldn't help but get sucked into the story and be mesmerized by everything that happens to MAc, almost like it is happening to me....especially since it is written in first person...I think Karen very cleverly wrote this in first person so the reader gets really personal with Mac and as she grows and changes, the readers grow and change with her and thus the story telling becomes more personal than ever. I highly recommend this book and the fever series to everyone....and it will be worth every dollar spent on these books. In my opinion, Karen only writes masterpieces and missing out on her books is not an option for all book lovers.
This was very different to her usual works, but none the less it was done very well, with plenty of action, magical beings, and whit.
Imagine finding out your sister has been murdered and no one seems to know by who or what. Go on a journey as you follow the sisters trail and unearth all sorts of magical creatures from old, and where better than Ireland.......
Darkfever is certainly a departure from her previous books in the Highlander series and in my opinion not nearly as well written.
This book is written in the first person, which is quite difficult to get use to and there is certainly many twists and turns with so many different and varied characters you never really get totally absorbed in the book.
I can never quite understand how Moning can keep refering to one of the main characters with his full name, very off putting.
This book is a big departure from Karen Marie Moning's usual writing style, as it's written in the first person. It's a bit disconcerting to begin with, but once you get into it, Darkfever is a lot like the Highlander series, which I personally loved so that's great! An excellent story line, intriguing characters and many twists and turns to keep the reader interested. Also, the paperback option is much cheaper than the hardcover, which is always a bonuc - a great read for under $20!! Overall: highly recommended, and I can't wait for the next book in the series!
