Carl Sagan was an amazing scientist. But perhaps even more, he was a wonderful promoter of the wonder and beauty to be found in science. A brilliant presenter of Science Appreciation (like science popularising without the dumbing down). And a great spinner of a yarn, made all the better because the tales were true.
A truly wonderful companion piece to the documentary series of the same name, and an excellent read in on it's own.
He makes the science seen not only interesting (and he certainly does that) but also beautiful and personally uplifting.
