This is a very good book, though I must admit it doesn't start that brilliantly. I guess Carroll could be described as a lapsed Catholic, and his interpretation of the resurrection (basically a "did-not-happen" myth) and the disciples' subsequent behavious is actually very disappointing. But once he gets beyond that into later church history, his analysis picks up and the story gets more riveting and, it has to be said, depressing. A mostly excellent read, though no doubt controversial.
