Nearly every weekend now, somewhere in New Zealand, there is a fun run or walk being held, where ordinary people can have a go at the extraordinary. With the huge upsurge in these events over the last few years, many people who began with as little as a three-kilometre jog, are now ready for a bigger challenge - a half marathon, or 21.1 kilometres. But how to start? How much should they train? Is it possible to train TOO much? Do they need special foods or supplements? How can they avoid injuries? This book holds the answers, in simple, accessible language and with a practical approach that takes into account the busy nature of contemporary lives. With chapters on health, clothing, mental attitude, nutrition and hydration, stretching, injuries, planning for race day, recovery and, of course, detailed training programmes, this book covers all the basics for beginners and improvers.

My friend gave me this book to read and said it was really good. Of course, at first I was sceptical (how good could it be?!!), but then I really got into it! The text is easy to read with practical suggestions and the training programmes are really simple to follow. And they are so achieveable - even for a non runner like me I could envisage running for 10 minutes at a time to start with building up to something bigger. I definitely recommend this book.
Fantastic book - a must have if you are planning to run a half marathon. Easy to read with excellent tips and i have been using it as a guide week by week rather than just reading it and putting it away. i would highly recommend this book.
