K-Gr 2-Each book opens with a spread about the uses of the animal, followed by a diagram identifying its exterior parts and a chart comparing its size with that of a six-year-old child. A later spread is devoted to different breeds-both domestic and wild-from around the world. The global theme continues with two pages of brief descriptions of customs surrounding the animal in various countries; for example, "In China, each year is named after one of twelve animals. People born in the Chinese Year of the Rooster are hard-working and brave" (Chickens). The brief information can be misleading, and the customs are not always widely practiced. Back matter includes an activity and a list of ideas for adults. The pictures, both photographs and drawings, are more entertaining than informative. It should also be noted that the animals are shown in free-range environments, and are not representative of all American farming practices. While the limited text is accurate, its simplicity has the potential for confusion and false conclusions.-Carolyn Janssen, Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH Copyright 2007 Reed Business Information.
