About the Author

Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Wales of Norwegian parents. He spent his childhood in England and, at age eighteen, went to work for the Shell Oil Company in Africa. When World War II broke out, he joined the Royal Air Force and became a fighter pilot. At the age of twenty-six he moved to Washington, D.C., and it was there he began to write. His first short story, which recounted his adventures in the war, was bought by "The Saturday Evening Post," and so began a long and illustrious career.
After establishing himself as a writer for adults, Roald Dahl began writing children's stories in 1960 while living in England with his family. His first stories were written as entertainment for his own children, to whom many of his books are dedicated.
Roald Dahl is now considered one of the most beloved storytellers of our time. Although he passed away in 1990, his popularity continues to increase as his fantastic novels, including "James and the Giant Peach," "Matilda," "The BFG," and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," delight an ever-growing legion of fans.

Reviews

An abbreviated version of Dahl's classic story takes to the pop-up stage, accompanied by Blake's scraggly pen-and-ink caricatures. Gatefolds, mini-booklets, and pop-ups reveal the major plot points of the story ("Two Golden Tickets Found Today!" shouts a headline on a foldout newspaper), with a towering glass elevator on the final spread. Smart use of interactive elements-many of which focus on the grim fates of Charlie's fellow ticket-holders-makes Wonka's already magical world feel even more so. Ages 7-up. (Oct.) 5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 21/06/2010

Roald Dahl's classic tale! Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is my absolute favourite Dahl book. Full of action and drama and a good helping of chocolate, it is the tale of how honesty and integrity triumph over greed and general nastiness. Suitable as a read aloud book for children from six and up, or a read alone for children of around eight years. A definite must have for any book collection. Read it as a kid and re read it as an adult.

4 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 10/09/2007

For anyone who has seen either movie production of this book, you have to read the book first to appreciate it fully. Poor Charlie Bucket is one of only 5 children around the world granted the priviledge of touring Willy Wonka's magical chocolate factory after finding a golden ticket by chance one day. Many surprises lie in store for the children during that eventful day... would recommend to anyone young or old
