"Cats sleep anywhere, any table, any chair ..." Eleanor Farjeon's poem and Anne Mortimer's exquisite illustrations make a perfect gift for cat lovers, young and old. Her first book was published in 1916, a collection of poems called Nursery Rhymes of London Town. Her next book Martin Pippin in the Apple Orchard made her famous as a writer for children. After her death in 1965 the Eleanor Farjeon award was set up in her memory, to give recognition to outstanding figures in the world of children's books. Anne Mortimer is recognised as one of the finest contemporary painters of cats. She is a member of the Society of Botanical Artists and of the Royal Miniature Society, from whom she received an honourable mention for the most outstanding miniature of the year. She lives in Dulverton, Somerset. PrizesEleanor Farjeon's poem is widely recognised and loved, and is commonly studied in schools. Anne Mortimer acclaimed as an outstanding painter of cats. Cat theme makes ideal gift book. Will appeal to a wide audience, from young children to cat lovers. ReviewsA brief observant poem by the late Farjeon (1882-1965) provides the text for this slim book. Dainty illustrations depict blissfully smiling, sacked-out cats, "Fitted in a cardboard box,/ In the cupboard/ With your frocks." Mortimer's (A Pussycat's Christmas) expertise as a painter of miniatures is evident in both the meticulous detail of her work and her attention to texture‘the cats' fur looks plush and silky. Her native British taste shows up in a fondness for floral patterns, especially in soft pinks and blues, which decorate hatboxes, upholstery and clothing. Those who really dote on cats will probably say, "Aw, how cute!" at every cat sprawled out on a swing or curled up in a shoe; others may find this excursion a bit purr-ecious. Ages 3-7. (Sept.) PreS-Gr 2-- Farjeon's hymn to cat behavior (``Cats sleep/ Anywhere,/ Any table,/Any chair,'') is brought to life in Jenkins' humorous, stylized watercolor cartoons. The book is a wonderful combination of clean text and purrfectly matched illustrations.
