The first volume in the S.T. Joshi edited anthology of Lovecraft's fiction is just brilliant and may well be the volume to convert new readers to Lovecraft's epic world of elder gods and occult forces. But be warned, once Lovecraft's prose weaves its spell on you, you'll want to read more....thankfully, there are two other volumes. Well done Penguin to showing Lovecraft the respect he deserves!

Lovecraft's short story 'The Call of Cthulhu' arguably stands as the finest he has written, followed closely by 'The Colour Out of Space'.
Lovecraft's painstaking attention to structure and masterful restraint permit the tale's atmosphere to balloon to hideous proportions, instilling in the reader a profound sense of dread and foreboding which is comparable only to the best short stories of Arthur Machen or Algernon Blackwood.
The other stories in this Penguin collection closely reflect Lovecraft's deep attention to the mechanics of psychological horror.
This collection is too fine a read for any fan of the weird or horrible to pass by.

HP Lovecraft will always be a Favorite of Hollywood. Items such as the Necronomicon (later taken up by the Evil Dead franchise) and unspeakable horrors who only a Great hero can face.
Writing in a style that Many critics can Purple Prose, Howard Phillip Lovecraft instead uses his discriptions and suggestion to carry his short stories.
Having never gotten around to writing a Novel HP Lovecraft instead specialized on short stories. It is in these stories that a Mythos was created populated Mythical with Creatures from pre-dawn to things that go bump-in-the-night. The World which he has created has been taken up and furthered by generations of new Authors.
This is a great book for Teens looking for a quick horror fix and the jaded horror junkie to trace the roots of old Horror Movies from the 50's.
