Destined to become one of the most influential postwar armoured cars, the V100 Commando was developed by the Cadillac Gage Company in 1962 as a private venture and the first prototype was completed in the same year. It was designed as a multi-purpose vehicle and could function as an 11-man personnel carrier, reconnaissance vehicle, convoy escort, command or patrol car and a riot vehicle. The V100 was tested and evaluated in Vietnam before full-scale production began in 1964. It saw widespread use in Vietnam by both US and South Vietnamese forces. This title describes the design, development and operational use of the V100 Commando, including its continued deployment around the world.

Reviews

4 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 09/02/2009

Osprey are well known for their range of specialised military titles, and this study of the V-100 is another great addition to their library. Note that this title covers the V-100 only, not it's multitude of variants. That said, the book covers the development and deployment of the vehicle from 1961-70, most crucially during the Vietnam war when the vehicle was supplied to both US and ARVN forces.

While I can appreciate the backstory of the vehicle, and certainly recognise the value in the summary of the V-100's tactical employment, I found - as a modeller - there are a few too many gaps in the summary. If, like me, you're buying the book to add more detail to the recently released Bronco kit, be advised that there are few details of, for instance, the turret interior.

The colour plates are very clean. I suggest they have been rendered on a computer, but there's nothing wrong with that. Looking for alternative colour schemes to OD Green? You won't find too many here.

An excellent primer on this long neglected vehicle. I'd recommend this as an excellent starter profile of the V-100 - paired up with a decent photgraphic walkaround, and you should have all the knowledge at hand.
