For the first time in the history of the Little House books, this new edition features Garth Williams' interior art in vibrant, full color, as well as a beautifully redesigned cover. The adventures of Laura Ingalls and her family continue as they move from their little house on the banks of Plum Creek to the wilderness of the unsettled Dakota Territory. Here Pa works on the new railroad until he finds a homestead claim that is perfect for their new little house. Laura takes her first train ride as she, her sisters, and their mother come out to live with Pa on the shores of Silver Lake. After a lonely winter in the surveyors' house, Pa puts up the first building in what will soon be a brand-new town on the beautiful shores of Silver Lake. The Ingallses' covered-wagon travels are finally over.

Laura Ingalls Wilders lovely books of growing up as a pioneer girl moving west in a covered wagon have never been out of print. In this book, scarlett fever has made Mary blind, grasshoppers have destroyed the crops and Pa has itchy feet. Given a job on the railroad, the family move west again, this time part of the way by train. First settlers in Dakota territory, this is Laura's story of the beginnings of De Smet, Dakota
This is another excellent book in the "Little House" series. You really need to read all of them in order. They do all stand alone as exceptional books but reading all of them in chronological order just makes them that much better. You become part of the story.
In this book they live in new territory where everyone leaves for the winter and they are left to house sit a beautiful surveyors cottage.
Coming from a warm part of the world, the children and I found the descriptions of winter life so interesting. We particularly wanted to try "skating" or make that sliding on the frozen lake in their shoes. Their encounter with the wolf makes it even more exciting.
This is another wonderful book in a series that will be loved by anyone who reads it!
