About the Author

Robert M. Maniquis teaches English at UCLA, and he is a research associate of the Centre d'Etude de la Langue et de la Litterature Francaise du XVIIe et XVIIIe Siecles at the University of Paris, Sorbonne (Paris IV). He is the author of Lonely Empires: Personal and Public Visions of Thomas De Quincey and the editor of collections of essays on eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British and French culture. He is currently working on a study of violence and sacrifice in late-eighteenth-century European culture.
