The recent attack on St. Vladimir's Academy devastated the entire Moroi world. Many are dead. And, for the few victims carried off by Strigoi, their fates are even worse. A rare tattoo now adorns Rose's neck; a mark that says she's killed far too many Strigoi to count. But only one victim matters - Dimitri Belikov. Rose must now choose one of two very different paths: honoring her life's vow to protect Lissa, her best friend and the last surviving Dragomir princess, or dropping out of the Academy to strike out on her own and hunt down the man she loves. She'll have to go to the ends of the earth to find Dimitri and keep the promise he begged her to make. But the question is, when the time comes, will he want to be saved?

Gr 9 Up-This latest installment is a wonderful mix of love, loss, loyalty, and betrayal. Half vampire and half human, Rose Hathaway's world is torn apart when the love of her life, Dimitri, is turned into a Strigoi, one of a group of evil, undead vampires out to destroy the Moroi, who are living vampires. She drops out of St. Vladimir's Academy and journeys to Russia to save Dimitri from himself. In St. Petersburg, she befriends Sydney, a member of a secret group of alchemists who aids in her quest. Together they track down Dimitri's family in Omsk; her stay there gives her time to heal as well as to make an important discovery about her relationship to her friend Lissa, a Moroi princess with healing abilities. When Rose confronts Dimitri, he takes her hostage and puts her to the ultimate test. The story features strong character development and an action-packed plot full of many twists and turns. A well-written and satisfying story that will leave older teens wanting more.-Donna Rosenblum, Floral Park Memorial High School, NY Copyright 2010 Reed Business Information.

Just finished reading this book.... LOVED IT.... fans of this series will definitely not be disappointed.... in this book we learn a little more about strigoi... the fact they are soulless really comes through for me in this book..... theres plenty of twists, action and of course rose's humour and blunt take of things.... the ending left me feeling a bit unsettled.... guess i have to wait for the next one to see what happens next :)
This is an amazing series that is sure to suck in all vampire fiction fans!
With the fantasy, romance and overall addictive story line you will find yourself absorbed in each book from beginning to end, each one containing their fair share of surprises that will keep you wanting more.
The eagerly awaited Blood Promise will be another fantastic addition to this series. Finally fans will be able to learn the fate of Rose and Dimitri, two of the characters we have followed in the previous three books.
Richelle Mead is an excellent fantasy author and I recommend all of her series to fans of this genre.
Give them a go! You won’t be disappointed.
I found the first half of this book quite dull. I'm afraid I don't find Rose very convincing, particularly in the fighting scenes which are glossed over. Her smart alec Americanisms (kind of like a female Bruce Willis - yuk!) also don't do it for me; however, Dimitri as a strigoi is a far more interesting and original character. I also found the mind contact with Lissa too convenient - that is... we've come to a flat spot in the story... I know, I'll just catch up on what Lissa's doing, that'll keep them entertained. Despite all that, the book has its moments - the scenes where Rose is high on vampire bites and low on 'witticism' are actually very well written and where I suspect the author's politically incorrect interest lies.
This was an amazing book. It took a very different direction then the three before it but it has allowed for a lot more to happen in the last two books. There are so many moments in this book where I couldn't stop reading because it was so exciting. I can't wait to see what happens next.
what a great book. I like vampires. I enjoyed the book but it dragged on a bit. The last half of the book was a lot better and touched my heart. Looking forward to the next one.

If you love this series, you will love this action packed book. Whilst it doesn't answer all questions, and only opens the door to more, it will have you gripped from page one, and you won't be able to put it down until you have finished the entire book. What's more, the ending will leave you hanging for the next book in the series, due to be released next year.
I thoroughly recommend this novel! Make sure you have read the first three books!
Another great series if you love the fantasy fiction. Great for adults as well as teenagers. Love the series and can't wait for the next book. Thought this book started out a bit slow but was still definately worth the read.
