Juju Sundin describes methods of active birth, that any woman can use, and in a down-to-earth, easily accessible style. She explains ways to use the body's natural chemical make up to control pain and avoid panic in childbirth, along with explaining the physical parts of childbirth in a way that empowers women in labour. I personally used some of these techniques in my own labour and my midwife was astounded that I managed to have such a wonderful labour without pain medication and with a 10lb baby!
Sundin also has a pragmatic view of "natural birth" and pain medication, that informs women to allow them to make the decisions that are right for them and their baby without guilt and second guesses.
I recommend this book to every expecting mother I can. It was so valuable to me when planning the birth of my second son (which was VBAC).

Great book. Lots of good skills to plug-in when preparing for birth and parenthood. Haven't tested them out (yet), but the physiological explanation is magic for the rational mind. Good advice based on authors experience and a lot more involved than just moving around and breathing. Definitely worth a read if you like learning everything there is to know...

A definite must-read for any woman planning to have a natural birth- or at least hoping to have a birth with minimum medical intervention. This no nonsense approach answers the questions we all have when facing birth for the first time, and most importantly, takes away the fear by explaining the physical processes of labour, and giving women the skills and confidence to manage labour pain naturally.

So far I have found this book excellent. I have not had my baby yet but it is helping me to dispel any fear about childbirth. It does not criticise the use of pain relief during childbirth but it does give you tools to try to get through as much of the labour as possible without using pain medication. It explains why/how/when the pain occurs and tells you what your body does to cope and how you can use this to your advantage. An excellent book for anyone who has heard too many horror stories and is scared of childbirth. If you can understand what your body is doing and why it takes away the fear of the unknown. I would recommend to anyone who has fear of childbirth or would like to understand more about the process.
