To the disbelief of Starfleet Command, and especially of Admiral Janeway, the Borg were not vanquished when the USS Voyager destroyed their transwarp conduits. Before Dishonor contained all the elements for a great story, the Enterprise, the Borg, Seven, and even Spock. Peter David is a talented writer and has many great Star Trek novels under his belt. Sadly, however, Before Dishonor left me a little disappointed.
Basically, the Borg left 'dead' from 'Resistance' aren't really so dead after all. They have evolved to a new way of assimilation and are a threat to humanity again. The best parts of the book are the fight scenes, which were fast paced, and creative. The worst part? The new crew members! The Starfleet officers introduced to the legendary USS Enterprise just got so annoying! They were ill-disciplined and from the start, there seemed to be a new clique of mutinous crew members! T'Lana, the new 'counselor', needs an appointment to one instead with so many 'issues'! After a while, I was hoping some of the characters killed off in 'Resistance' would be resurrected instead.
While the book's not all bad, it just wasn't that good either. Definitely don't expect an 'Imzadi' (arguably the best Peter David book).
