This a fantastic novel about a young man on his Overseas Experience who, unexpectantly, ends up 'off the beaten track' with two other friends he meets in Thailand. The story can be likened to that of William Golding's 'Lord of the Flies' except it is set in modern day Thailand, with echoes of the Vietnam War. Soon the traveler's life turns from exciting to a fight for survial on a hidden beach. A highly recommended read.

The Beach is a fantastic read - especially for 'travellers'. Set in Thailand, it follows the adventures of a group of travellers who try to find a rumoured isolated beach community. The book really digs into the psyche of why it is that some choose to travel, as opposed to just holiday. A major movie was made out of the book, although the book is much more interesting and the characters a better developed.
A riveting read that is probably best kept for lazy reading days on the beach or to inspire you for your next adventure. The Penguin edition is particularly good for traveling as its light and cheap.
