The artwort conveys a sense of chaos that exentuates the power of the unfolding story. Batman is vulnerable, a feeling that the reader shares as the battle with the joker hots up. A great read.

Well, it really doesn't get any better than this. I was hooked on hits from the first time I saw the cover image in a comic shop.

The news media scenes now, are pretty much right out of today, with screaming pundits on the television, American style.

The fascism and violence prompts Bruce Wayne out of retirement. Heartened by the assistance of a young girl, he plans his strategy.

He has one major obstacle.

Superman, who is now a cover special forces operative lapdog.

A true classic and a must have in any fan's library. Although dated some what by the "cold war" references the central story remains as strong and gritty as ever. The art might make it a bit of a hard sell to those who are used to the more streamlined work in modern comics but it perfectly suits the tone of the script.

Frank Miller's classic portrayal of Batman was said to be the comic series that paved the way for many darker comics to be produced, and for good reason. Batman returns from obscurity after many years into a world overrun with criminal activity and one where Superman works for the government. The story climaxes with Batman beating the hell out of Superman and this alone makes The Dark Knight Returns worth reading.

A dark, dystopian future is depicted in this book. Batman is old and retired.

He is pulled back out of retirement by the re-emergence of the Joker and takes on a new Robin, a girl.

Widely thought of as the best Batman book around by the comics literati.
