Carle's book explores concepts such as time, size, animal types, sharing and bullying. I really liked this book as a child, but i think it has dated a little, and is not very politically correct.
The bad tempered lady bird/ Grouchy lady bug picks a fight with another lady bug when she does not want to share aphids. When the other lady bug agrees to fight her, the lady bug tells her that she isn't big enough for her to fight, and flies off to find increasingly bigger animals challenging them all to fight her.

Oh why oh why do we care if our kids books are "politically correct". The age group this book is aimed at have no concept of our crazy PC rubbish (thank goodness) so they laugh & giggle at all sorts of things that we would not.
Let our children enjoy the simple pleasures of this wonderful book...all too soon they will grow up so leave them, & the bad tempered ladybird alone!
I loved this story as a child & was delighted when my sister bought it for my daughter before she was even born!

My kids love this book, but it's not one of my personal favourites. As the ladybird comes across bigger and bigger animals the pages get longer (in 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' style). The story itself is fine, I guess, but it is quite long to read for a picture book. I drop some of the repetition while reading it out loud which keeps both the kids and myself happy.
