You've programmed your VCR, you've reinstalled Microsoft Windows, you can even check your e-mail on your Palm Pilot. But none of this experience will prepare you for the world's biggest technological marvel: A newborn baby. As every parent knows, infant technology isn't quite user-friendly, and first-timers have plenty of frequently-asked questions: How does one get the baby to sleep through the night? What is the most recommended way to swaddle a baby? When is it necessary to bring a baby to a physician for servicing? The Baby Owner's Manual has the answers. With step-by-step instructions, helpful schematic diagrams, trouble-shooting tips, and advice on lifelong maintenance, this manual skips the "warm and fuzzy" illustrations and cuts right to the chase. We'd love to see this book become the gold standard for Dads everywhere - it's something he can read while Mum is looking at What to Expect When You're Expecting.

Reviews

5 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 10/05/2010

This is an awesomely useful book. I bought this just before my first child was born and found it to be a really useful reference, as well as an easy book to read.
Alot of parenting books for new Dads tend to focus alot on how you should feel and how to bond with your child, and frankly, I don't need that, I'm quite comfortable finding my way through the emotional rollercoaster without some hippy telling me how I should feel about it.
This book gives you the low-down on how to wrap (swaddle) the baby, different ways to hold the baby, how to change a nappy, things you should have in the baby's room, considerations to be remembered when planning out the baby's room (like put the bin next to the change table so you can drop the dirty nappy straight in) and how to deal with your little bundle of joy when s/he stops being so joyful. In short, it's full of useful straightforward practical advice that will make the transition as painless as possible. The "troubleshooting" section alone is worth the cover price.
On top of that, it's written in a light hearted manner, in the style of an instruction manual with simple diagrams, which makes it very easy to just sit and read it right through (which I did).
If you buy this book, and read it through before your child is born, you will be amazed how well you'll find yourself coping with the trials ahead.
My partner was impressed when on day one I changed a nappy and wrapped up our firstborn (in the Burrito Roll style) and had him safely back in his bassinet with no fuss at all (well, except for the fact that he peed on me).
