Samurai arms and equipment are widely recognized as masterpieces in steel, silk, and lacquer. This extensively illustrated volume is published in conjunction with the first comprehensive exhibition devoted to the arts of the samurai. It includes the finest examples of swords - the spirit of the samurai - as well as sword mountings and fittings, armour and helmets, saddles, banners, and paintings. The objects in the catalogue, drawn entirely from public and private collections in Japan, feature more than 100 officially designated national treasures and important cultural properties. Dating from the 5th to the 19th century, these majestic works offer a complete picture of samurai culture and its unique blend of the martial and the refined.

This is an exhibition catalogue, for "Art of the Samurai: Japanese Arms and Armor, 1156-1868" at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2009-2010. As well as the 214 items, you get over 50 pages of background, history, etc. The items usually get 1 to 2 pages each; a full page or almost full-page photo is typical. Some items (especially multi-piece items) get multiple photos. Good descriptions, with measurements.
It's a stunningly beautiful exhibition, the biggest ever collection of National Treasures, Important Cultural Properties, and Important Art Objects (official Japanese government classifications) to be shown outside Japan. Great photography, and if you appreciate Japanese samurai stuff, you'll love this. About 50 armours and helmets, over 50 blades (mostly swords and tanto, some yari and naginata), about 70 sword mountings, tsuba, kozuka, etc, and some miscellaneous items.
A nice and robustly thick coffee table book/art book. Features the cream of the cream, so not a great source if you're looking for everyday working samurai items. Very beautiful and highly recommended.
