This is yet another essential book of literary criticism (and also technique) from the world's premiere ancient Hebrew scholar Robert Alter. Looking at the narratives of the Old Testament, he analyses their structure and the literary techniques the authors used to tell their story. Full of insights and highly inspiring - it sends you back to the original texts to try out his ideas for yourself. Put this together with Alter's "The Art of Biblical Poetry" and you have a great double headed resource. Exellent.
A wonderful book. I bought it as a reference book for a uni assignment but it was that kind of book that you just want to read straight through. The book both leads the reader to new ground and also affirms what is already known about textual composition and analysis. A book for the general reader and the theological student and scholar!
