About the Author
Theodor Seuss Geisel -- better known to millions of his fans as Dr. Seuss -- was born the son of a park superintendent in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1904. After studying at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, and later at Oxford University in England, he became a magazine humorist and cartoonist, and an advertising man. He soon turned his many talents to writing children's books, and his first book -- And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street -- was published in 1937. His greatest claim to fame was the one and only The Cat in the Hat, published in 1957, the first of a hugely successful range of early learning books known as Beginner Books.

I've heard this book used as a tool for a child being left in care for the first time, and it was great! Very good for reinforcing the message that even though the mother bird wasn't there for the baby bird, she still loved him and thought about him, similar to how mummy feels about her baby who is being left in care. Cute little story.
My children always enjoy reading about the poor baby bird who goes looking for for his mother. As he approaches each new creature and asks 'are you my mother?' only to be told 'no' and sent on his way. The poor baby bird ends up facing the 'snort' and then returning to his home where his mother finally arrives to care for him.
