An enchanting debutante and the eldest daughter of an impoverished country parson, Arabella embarks on her first London season. Armed with beauty, virtue and a benevolent godmother (as well as a notoriously impetuous temper) she quickly runs afoul of Robert Beaumaris, the most eligible Nonpareil of the day. When he accuses her of being yet another pretty female after his wealth, Arabella allows herself to be provoked -- into a deceitful charade that might have quite unexpected consequences...

Absolutely wonderful - Georgette Heyer Gold. Arabella is a great and strong young woman with excellent principles. Even though she gives in to the game of deception for a time, her conscience reminds her of her upbringing and temperance family. Wonderfully romantic (as Georgette Heyer always is), her hero is a character who undergoes a change throughout the book, and experiences the joy of thinking about the welfare of others over oneself. The laugh factor is ever present - lots of absurd conversations and dry humour.

Arabella, a beautiful young lady heading away from her father's church to the hustle and bustle of her first, and only, London season, is horrified to discover that when she is forced to stop at the house of a rich, handsome man, that he believes she is throwing herself at him for his wealth. Anxious to prove him wrong - and wishing to teach him a lesson! - she then tangles herself in lies, good deeds and rumours so thoroughly that it seems a London season was a bad idea...

Definitely one of my favourite books. Arabella is a very unique character in which she is very different to a lot of the characters that Georgette Heyer has written. Arabella comes from a church background and brings a lot of her values to London. This book had me laughing out loud several times. A fantastic read and I would recommend this book to anyone.
