Angel: After the Fall is the quite possibly the best TV show turned comic series ever. It was epic, tragic, moving and full of captivating substance page by page, twist after twist.
For those that don't know yet, this is the official continuation of Angel. THIS is what happens after the show, after "Not Fade Away" which arguably was a cliffhanger ending. We finally get the results of what happened after the alley fight. Illyria has her opportunity to be explored further in depth. Gunn has his biggest gamechanging role. Connor finally becomes the well adjusted champion he was meant to be. Gwen Raider also gets to play a bigger role. The internal penance of a dark tortured character like Angel is excellently explored here. We are given an insight throughout the series of his brooding mind via the internal dialogue.
Angel and his supporting cast are more damaged than ever here. Angel gets the thing he always wanted only its not a reward, Gunn becomes messed up dealing with being the thing he hated most (a vampire), Wesley wants to move on and be with the one he lost, Gwen Raiden loses her ability to touch and connect, and Illyria with her confused and schizophrenic memories of Fred intermingling with her own self.
After the Fall has darker undertones than any other Angel story so far. The cards are down. Angel is feeling more down than usual. LA has become post-apocalyptic. It is perpetual twilight and closed off from the rest of the world. Vampires constantly feel on the verge of combustion. LA has become a free for all demon playground, and some demons have taken over parts of LA for themselves. Things are chaotic and the citizens have gone manic and loot for their survival. Also there are deaths of friends and loved ones. There is something resilient yet restraining as After the Fall counts down towards the end. The adrenaline of not giving in and rising up inspires and channels the intensity to another level. Things become so devastating towards the end, you'd want it to be all back to the way it was.
