A masterpiece and classic of NZ fiction, Alex (both the character and the novel) is inspirational and a definite must-read for any self-respecting bibliophile, or pretty much anyone in general. Based in part on Duder's own experiences as a swimmer during this time, this book is engaging, realistic, poignant, evocative, and superlative. Would be recommended to age 10+ for full understanding of everything that's going on in the book, although mature and intelligent younger readers will have no problem with this.
