Pepperberg, an animal cognitive scientist and associate research professor at Brandeis University, made history with her landmark research involving Alex, an African Grey parrot. Her detailed findings based on two decades of research were published in 1999 in The Alex Studies: Cognitive and Communicative Abilities of Grey Parrots. She was able to prove that African Greys possess cognitive and communicative abilities beyond what scientists had previously believed possible in animals other than humans. After her previous book, Pepperberg had almost another decade of interactions with Alex before his sudden death in September 2007. Her latest is more memoir than research work, focusing on her personal relationship with Alex while introducing lay readers to her extensive research on these remarkable birds. This is a nice companion to Pepperberg's more scientific writings. Recommended for academic and public libraries alike.-Diana Hartle, Univ. of Georgia Science Lib., Athens Copyright 2008 Reed Business Information.
Alex is the African gray parrot whose ability to master a vocabulary of more than 100 words and answer questions about the color, shape and number of objects--garnered wide notice during his life as well as obituaries in worldwide media after his death in September 2007. Pepperberg, who teaches animal cognition, has previously documented the results of her 30-year relationship with Alex in The Alex Studies. While this book inevitably covers some of the same ground, it is a moving tribute that beautifully evokes "the struggles, the initial triumphs, the setbacks, the unexpected and often stunning achievements" during a groundbreaking scientific endeavor spent "uncovering cognitive abilities in Alex that no one believed were possible, and challenging science's deepest assumptions about the origin of human cognitive abilities." Pepperberg deftly interweaves her own personal narrative--including her struggles to gain recognition for her research--with more intimate scenes of life with Alex than she was able to present in her earlier work, creating a story that scientists and laypeople can equally enjoy, if they can all keep from crying over Alex's untimely death. This is an excellent book for all parrot owners and lovers as it shows you just how intelligent those loud chirping friends are. It was incredible to hear the struggle the author had and also what things Alex could do. This book made me laugh and cry, definitely worth a read.

This was an excellent book although difficult. Difficult because it is imbued with regret. As Dr. Pepperburg was trying to prove herself in the world of hard science she had to try and keep an emotional distance from Alex. I wanted her to just cut loose and *love* this extraordinary bird. There is no doubt she did love him but it was love at a distance as she was always mindful of being a scientist embarking on a series of experiments to prove animal intelligence. The tension between trying to make it in the rigorous cold world of hard science and her natural tendency to love and nurture a being totally dependent upon her is ever present.
As for Alex, he comes through as autocratic, loving, mischievous and very very smart. For anyone who has known and loved a parrot, or any animal, it is a must read. It is also thought-provoking as to the attitude humankind takes towards the creatures with whom we share this planet.

This book, although excellent. was a difficult read. Not because it was hard to read but because the effort of Dr. Pepperburg to keep a rigorous scientific objectivity towards Alex while attempting to squash her natural love of this extraordinary bird was hard. I wanted her to just cut lose and *love* him without reserve. No matter how assiduously science tries to remove itself from the thing observed, it is impossible, as proven in quantum mechanics. There is regret as Alex died suddenly and Dr. Pepperburg's writing is imbued with a sadness beyond Alex's sudden loss. As she was trying to make her way in the world of hard science, where emotion is frowned upon and objectivity is king she had no choice. Still, it's a strong statement about not withholding love, wherever it is found.
As for Alex, this grey parrot purchased from a pet shop, his personality comes through larger than life. He was in turn autocratic, loving, mischievous and very very smart. For anyone who has loved a parrot, or any animal, and known of their intelligence and capacity to love, I highly recommend this book. It is very thought provoking as to how we treat the animals who share this planet with us.
