The War is just over. In Venice, a city elaborately and affectionately described, Richard Cantrell, an American colonel, falls passionately in love with Renata, a young Italian countess who has 'a profile that could break your or anyone else's heart'. Cantrell is embittered, war-scarred old enough to be Renata's father but is overwhelmed by the selflessness and freshness of the love she is offering. But this is no fairy tale. The fighting may be ended, but the wounds of war have not yet healed. And for some, the longed-for peace has come too late.

About the Author

Ernest Miller Hemingway was born in Chicago in 1899 as the son of a doctor and the second of six children. After a stint as an ambulance driver at the Italian front, Hemingway came home to America in 1919, only to return to the battlefield - this time as a reporter on the Greco-Turkish war - in 1922. Resigning from journalism to focus on his writing instead, he moved to Paris where he renewed his earlier friendship with fellow American expatriates such as Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein. Through the years, Hemingway travelled widely and wrote avidly, becoming an internationally recognized literary master of his craft. He received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954, following the publication of The Old Man and the Sea. He died in 1961.

2 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 06/06/2007

Hoping for an engaging story while in Venice myself, and sharing the same name as the young woman who is the love interest of EH's Colonel, I was rather disappointed by this promising novel.

For anyone who has been to Venice, the promise of a magically fulfilling romance is not delivered in this book. In fact, it is quite sickly sweet with just a few too many 'I love yous' ', and 'hold me close' and 'do you love me?'.

The most interesting paragragh was a description of a smile of a young shy man. Almost worth the read of the book.

Not a good intro to EH. Must have been a filler for his publishing contract, maybe?

4 of 5 Stars! – Customer review on 09/01/2007

I found this to be a wonderfully engaging tale, better than some of the nominal EH classics. EH has wonderfully captured the emotions and regrets of Col. Cantwell. My enthusiastic opinion is not uniformly shared, however, and this book should be approached with caution. I think the reason that this novel is not generally loved is that there is virtually no `action'. This is an introspective story from start to finish. If you are new to EH and looking to read your first novel, you should not start here.
