Reviews
Psychologist and best-selling author Wiseman (Quirkology) draws on scientific research to help people achieve their dreams and ambitions in a matter of minutes rather than months. Contrary to popular thinking, he says, playing hard to get, visualizing the ideal plan, and offering rewards for achievement don't work. Instead, the author suggests bonding over dislikes, imagining the achievement of a goal, and praising effort over the finished product. Although some of Wiseman's findings would definitely improve one's life if adopted, others seem far-fetched. Wait for the paperback. I really enjoyed reading 59 seconds and am considering buying additional copies as gifts. Backed by research, Wiseman gives fascinating insight into the way the human mind really operates. His research debunks many of the myths generated by self-help gurus, such as the so called success of visualisation techniques. I didn't think I'd enjoy a book written by a professor (not being a fan of intellectual speak!), but Wiseman displays a quirky sense of humour and has an engaging and simple writing style. Not only does Wiseman present interesting facts, but in doing so gives us the tools to change our lives with methods that have been proven to work. I loved this book.
