"This is a formidable book of record . . . from the tiny virus, via 28 individual human stories, to an entire continent. The stories will tear you apart before putting you back together, fully-armed and ready to go to war with a virus more dangerous than any W.M.D."--Bono "Provocative stuff on a topic where most writing feels both distancing and not terribly profound."--"Salon.com" "Nolen's stories give a human face to HIV/AIDS in Africa -- and enrich our understanding of the disease in intangible ways."--"San Francisco"" Chronicle Book Review" "These stories offer astonishing glimpses of the people of a continent brought to its knees....graceful, often memorable portraits are chosen from among the lucky few who came back from the dead."--"Los Angeles"" Times Book Review" "gives the epidemic a human face-more precisely, 28 human faces, one for each million Africans estimated to be infected with HIV....an informative and a powerful read, which will help Western r

This book, a collection of 28 stories of people whose lives have been affected by HIV/AIDS, completely opened up my eyes. Nolen collected these emotional tales during years of living and working on the continent most people would rather ignore, where AIDS is creating a crisis too huge to ignore for much longer. I learnt alot about the medicine of the disease from this book, including attempts to find a vaccine, or other preventative measures, and the shocking everyday ways it is being transmitted in a country such as S. Africa where prevalence rates are higher than the common cold in Australia. Easy to read in small sessions, but I guarantee you will not want to put this book down, or ignore the need for action. Would recommend for teens upward, anyone interested in Africa, AIDS, personal stories, current issues, poverty and orphans, or looking for inspiration. This is the sort of book I carry around and just hand to people, and so far, they have all been as captivated as I am.
