If the pastor or informed layperson wanted helpful work on Paul's first epistle to the Corinthians on his or her shelf, I would suggest David Prior's work (in the "Bible Speaks Today" series) and this excellent entry by Blomberg into the NIVAC series (New International Version Application Commentary). This series has three sections:
* Original Meaning
* Bridging Contexts
* Contemporary Significance.
The series is designed to bring the ancient text - via solid and dependable exegesis - into the 21st century, thereby showing its relevance for today. Blomberg - a first rate biblical scholar - does this exceptionally well. The orignial meaning sections are fantastic, and great insights are revealed and shared in the contemporary significance sections (I don't refer a lot to the middle section). The book also has an introduction to the issues in Corinth, along with a brief description on a wide range of 1 Corinthian commentaries. he most used book on 1 Corinthians I have.
